What is Hydrolyzed Whey Protein?
Hydrolyzed whey protein is basically a form of whey protein which has undergone additional processing and filtration to remove all of the lactose, leaving nothing behind but pure protein. The protein molecules are broken down even finer, so they can be more easily absorbed by the body. Whey protein is derived from milk, cow's milk the majority of the time, and is a by-product left behind when milk is turned into cheese. When milk is turned into cheese, it separates into "curds" and "whey". The curds form thick clumps and lumps, whereas the whey remains as liquid form, and not surprisingly, the whey is where almost all of the whey protein is found.
Warning: Due to the nature of the hydrolyzation process (hydrolysis), this product is very bitter.
How does it work?
Hydrolyzed whey protein undergoes a pre-digesting process via hydrolyzing the mixture, helping to break the protein molecules down into even finer molecules of smaller proteins and amino acids. The amino acids are broken down into shorter chains, and so can be absorbed more rapidly into the muscles. Generally, the faster the absorption rate, the more beneficial and effective the protein becomes, and as many experts consider hydrolyzed whey protein to be one of, if not the most, fast absorbing whey protein supplement to date, it's no wonder why it is proving such an exciting and popular supplement.
What are the main benefits of hydrolyzed whey protein?
Here's a look at a few of the more prominent and popular benefits associated with this particular supplement:
A rapid absorption rate
One of the main selling points of hydrolyzed whey protein is its absorption rate. Whey protein is already a fast-absorbing protein, but due to the enzymatic process that breaks down the protein and amino acid molecules in this supplement, once consumed it will be absorbed into the bloodstream and transported to the muscles, or rather to the cells within the muscles, almost instantaneously. The problem with other protein supplements, is the longer it takes them to digest and breakdown before they can be absorbed, the more of the protein, amino acids, and nutrients will be naturally lost during digestion. With hydrolyzed whey protein, the protein is absorbed before powerful enzymes and stomach acids have chance to damage the protein, which means that the amount you consumed will be the amount that is fed to your muscles.
Virtually lactose free
As mentioned, hydrolyzed whey protein removes pretty much all of the lactose from the whey, leaving nothing but pure protein. Other whey proteins still contain lactose, which from a muscle building standpoint, can be detrimental as lactose actually promotes the production of the hormone Estrogen, which not only suppresses testosterone production, it also hinders protein synthesis and promotes the storage of body fat as well. It's also ideal for people with food allergies such as those that cannot consume lactose due to a digestive intolerance.
Perfect post-workout protein
Your post-workout protein shake is the most important shake of the day, and getting those proteins, amino acids, vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients into your muscles as soon as possible following a workout is absolutely essential. Hydrolyzed whey protein is absorbed almost instantaneously, which is ideal for really taking advantage of your post-workout "anabolic window" in which the cells in the muscles are primed for maximum absorption. In simple terms, after we exercise, our cells are completely empty and become swollen so they can absorb more nutrients. By filling these cells up with protein, amino acids, glycogen, and other nutrients, they can get to work on initiating protein synthesis and repairing and rebuilding muscle tissue almost immediately.
So, to summarize, the main benefits are:
- Rapid absorption
- Very high protein content
- Complete amino acid profile
- Easily digested
- Increased protein synthesis
- Increased muscle strength and size
- Rich in vitamins and minerals
- Increased muscle growth and recovery
- Great for people with allergies such as lactose intolerance
