What is Dextrose?

Dextrose is actually a monosaccharide that is considered a simple sugar. As it is a monosaccharide, it only has the one sugar molecule in it. Dextrose is actually a form of glucose sugar, that is used in a wide range of sports supplements to assist with muscle glycogen levels and energy levels in general. This fast absorbing carbohydrate is very sweet tasting, and has a very high Glycemic Index, and although that is generally considered to be a bad thing, at least, as far as health and fitness is concerned, if you use dextrose at the right time, and in conjunction with the right supplements, it can actually play a huge role in post-workout recovery, and muscle glycogen levels in general.

How does it work?

Basically, the primary purpose of dextrose powder, is so that it can be consumed immediately following your workout, along with your protein powder and various amino acids, to assist with recovery. The primary objective associated with dextrose powder, is for it to cause a spike in our insulin levels immediately after we train. After we exercise, glycogen levels in our muscle cells become depleted, and our cells are completely empty, and have also expanded slightly. This increase in volume means that they are primed anabolically to absorb more proteins, amino acids, and glycogen to be used as energy after we exercise. This is known as the ‘anabolic window’ and it generally lasts no longer than one hour post-workout. The idea behind adding dextrose to your shake, is that the powder causes insulin levels to spike, and as insulin helps shuttle glycogen, glucose, and anything else found in the bloodstream at the time, from the blood, into your muscle cells, the insulin basically allows the cells to absorb more proteins, amino acids, and nutrients, at a much quicker rate. This replenishes energy levels and kick-starts the post-workout recovery process.

What are the main benefits of using Dextrose supplements?

Some of the main benefits associated with dextrose supplements, include:

Muscle growth

Our post-workout shake is arguably our most important “meal” of the day, as that is when we can give our bodies and our muscles everything they need to initiate protein synthesis for optimum muscle recovery. Dextrose basically allows the muscle cells to absorb more nutrients at a much faster rate, so you can begin the post-workout recovery process almost instantaneously.

Tastes great

Another great benefit associated with dextrose powder is the fact that it tastes great. By adding a scoop to your post-workout protein shake, it will taste unbelievable, and best of all, you don’t need to worry about feeling guilty by drinking something so sweet tasting.

Replenishes glycogen levels

Not only does dextrose help create an insulin spike that will shuttle proteins and amino acids into the awaiting muscle cells, but it will also replenish glycogen levels, which is a primary source of energy used by the cells in the muscles. The more glycogen, the more energy the body has.

How and when should it be consumed?

Mix 1-2 scoops (30 g) in 12-16 floz of your favourite drink.

    Dextrose VS Maltodextrin

Maltodextrin, like dextrose, is another high GI carbohydrate that is ideal when consumed post-workout. This however, is a polysaccharide, and is digested and broken down slightly slower than dextrose. Maltodextrin also contains healthy fats, and is slightly less sweet tasting than dextrose. If you’re looking for a slightly slower releasing carbohydrate, maltodextrin is ideal.

What can it be stacked with?

For best results, dextrose should be consumed with a Whey Protein powder, BCAAs, L-Glutamine, Creatine Monohydrate, and L-Leucine – all in the same shake. In the evening, you may wish to consume a Casein Protein powder, which will help keep the body in an anabolic state as you sleep.
