What is Psyllium Husk?
Psyllium Husk is a powdered supplement that is obtained naturally from a plant native to the country of India, known as the plantago ovata, also known as a psyllium plant. It comes from the seeds of this plant where it is finely ground into a fine powder, to assist with the active uptake of this nutrient. It is one of the best natural sources of fiber that you could ever hope for, and what’s more, as so many people’s diets are lacking so badly in this very nutrient, this type of supplement is proving incredibly beneficial indeed. As you can probably guess, these husks are the natural outer coating of the seed of the psyllium plant’s seed, and whereas ordinarily the husks would be discarded as they would contain very few nutrients, in this instance, the husks have proven to be incredibly beneficial sources of dietary fiber. For diets lacking in fiber, or for people who are simply looking to increase their fiber intakes, psyllium husk is ideal.
How does it work?
Basically, the psyllium husk functions as a natural source of soluble dietary fiber, so you will receive all of the benefits associated with fiber when you supplement with this product. The fiber is actually a natural chemical bond that the human body cannot naturally break down, so it makes its way through the body without being absorbed after we’ve consumed it. It is a soluble fiber, which means that, once consumed, the body can only process it and break it down with the addition of water. It mixes with the water where it naturally breaks down and becomes almost like the consistency of wall paper paste. This gel coats the lining of the stomach as well as the digestive tract, plus it mixes with stools in our bodies, where it softens them by adding liquid, making it ideal for treating constipation, or simply for people who struggle with regular bowel movements. The psyllium husk powder is therefore usually combined with water, smoothies, or protein shakes, where it is then consumed and where it can then work its magic. In order for the psyllium to function correctly however, around 8 glasses of water at least, should be consumed each day. As well as all of the above, whilst in the intestines it also functions by almost sweeping them and keeping them clean and healthy, as it can absorb and remove harmful ingredients that are often precursors for LDL cholesterol. It also acts almost like a colonic irrigation, as it helps to remove fecal matter that may be stagnant and could potentially cause illness and infection.
What are the main benefits of Psyllium Husk supplements?
Some of the primary benefits associated with psyllium husk includes the following:
Great for constipation
Constipation is one of the most unpleasant and painful conditions that a person could ever be unfortunate enough to suffer with, which is why psyllium husk is so ideal. As mentioned, when it breaks down in water, it becomes a gel-like paste that mixes with the stools, is absorbed into them, where it adds moisture to them and softens them. This makes it much easier for a healthy and pain-free bowel movement to occur.
Lowers cholesterol
Another great benefit is the fact that the psyllium also helps to actively lower LDL cholesterol by removing harmful ingredients that function as precursors for the cholesterol. By removing them, LDL cholesterol does not get chance to build up, therefore you can avoid all of the unpleasant side effects associated with high LDL cholesterol, including heart disease, hypertension, and heart attack.
Promotes healthy digestion
On top of all of the above, psyllium husk also helps to actively improve digestive health and well-being as it sweeps the intestines and helps to keep them clear of toxins and free radicals, plus it assists with nutrient uptakes, allowing us to absorb more nutrients from the foods and drinks we consume.
