What is Colostrum Powder?
Colostrum, or bovine colostrums, as it is sometimes known, is a form of protein that is quite unlike any other you may be familiar with. Bovine colostrum is best described as being a pre-milk fluid that is secreted from cows around 2 – 4 days after the cows give birth to their young. This colostrum is not only rich in protein, it is also packed full of antioxidants, minerals, vitamins, amino acids, and other nutrients that do a whole world of good for the human body. Basically, when milk is considered to be at its most nutrient rich, this is referred to as colostrum, making it rich in nutrients. For example, the colostrum is rich in antibodies, including immunoglobulin G, providing overall health and wellness benefits.
How does it work?
This supplement works in a number of different ways, because it provides so many health and well-being benefits. To begin with, the antibodies and nutrients in the supplement help to strengthen and boost the immune system, which obviously then provides overall health and well-being benefits in the process. It is also packed full of amino acids and proteins however, making it a very popular bodybuilding supplement. These proteins and amino acids help to promote increases in lean muscle growth and repair, and they also help to naturally stimulate the synthesis of muscle proteins, in the form of protein synthesis, which again, is essential from a rest and recovery standpoint. What’s more, colostrum is also beneficial from a gastrointestinal point of view, as once consumed, the natural antibodies and nutrients get to work on neutralising harmful bacteria within the digestive tract, which can help to alleviate conditions such as diarrhea and stomach ache, and poor nutrient absorption.
What are the benefits of using Colostrum supplements?
Some of the primary benefits associated with bovine colostrum include the following:
Improved overall health
As this pre-milk supplement is basically a form of super-nutrient enriched milk, it provides a number of health and well-being benefits, due to the natural nutrient contents. For example, the antibodies and antioxidants help to boost the immune system, which in turn will provide additional protection against a whole host of various ailments.
Improved digestive health
As mentioned, another benefit of this supplement, is the fact that it has been proven to neutralise harmful bacteria found living within the digestive tract, and it can therefore provide optimal digestive health. Conditions such as diarrhea, ulcerative bowel troubles, poor nutrient absorption, and many more, can all be alleviated as a result of this supplement.
Increased muscle mass
A lot of bodybuilders also supplement with bovine colostrum, as the supplement is rich in amino acids, nutrients, and proteins, which are vital for the growth and repair of muscle tissue. What’s more, as they can also help to enhance the metabolism, you will often find that you will burn fat, whilst building lean muscle at the same time.

How and when should it be consumed?
Health Canada Recommended Dose (scoops): Scoop size: 5 g. Adults: 1 Scoop(s) 1 - 2 time(s) per day.
Bovine Colostrum VS Whey Protein
Whilst being rich in protein and amino acids, bovine colostrum is not exclusively marketed as a protein supplement, making it very different to whey protein. Whilst whey protein comes from milk, the bovine colostrum contains more nutrients and more natural goodness than whey protein, and less protein per serving. An average whey protein serving will provide around 30 – 40g of protein, whereas colostrum provides just 3g of protein. The difference is basically the natural nutrient contents, and in order to get the best of both worlds, many people recommend stacking the two together.
What can it be stacked with?
For the ultimate supplement stack designed to promote health and well-being, along with fat loss and muscle growth in the process, bovine colostrum can be stacked with supplements including: whey protein, creatine monohydrate, L-Glutamine, multivitamins, and omega 3 supplements.
