What is Omega-3?

Omega 3 softgels are basically omega 3 fatty acids that come in softgel form making them easy to be consumed. Omega 3 fatty acids are a form of polyunsaturated fats which are notoriously healthy and good for us, and are derived from a whole host of different forms. You have omega 3 fatty acids derived from seafood, as well as ones which come from plant-based sources such as nuts. These are known as essential fatty acids due to the fact that the body requires them, but it cannot synthesize them by itself, meaning that they have to come from dietary sources instead. They provide benefits for the major organs, they prevent diseases, they boost immunity, they help assist with weight loss, and much more besides.

How do they work?

To describe how omega 3 fatty acids work in general, would take an age because they provide so many different benefits, that it would be difficult to talk about the complex processes involved in each one. When it comes to the heart for example, omega 3s have actually been found to reduce triglycerides in the blood, subsequently reducing harmful LDL cholesterol. LDL cholesterol is responsible for fatty deposits and build ups in the arteries, which, overtime, can result in conditions such as heart disease, hypertension, stroke, blood clots, and even heart attacks. By reducing LDL cholesterol and lipids found in the bloodstream, the cardiovascular system in general, improves greatly. Studies have also found that omega 3 fatty acids can greatly enhance cognitive brain function, making them ideal for the brain, and for preventing degenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s and dementia. As if that wasn’t enough, they also boost the metabolism and can help communicate with fat burning enzymes within the body, encouraging the body to burn body fat as a primary source of energy, as opposed to carbohydrates.

What are the main benefits of Omega 3 supplements?

Some of the main benefits of omega 3 fatty acid supplements, include:

Fat loss

As mentioned, omega 3 fatty acids can increase the metabolism, allowing the body to burn off more calories and convert them into energy. This is beneficial as the more energy you have, the more calories you can burn off as you become more active. They also help encourage the body to use body fat as a source of energy, instead of carbohydrates.

Great for the brain

Another huge benefit of omega 3 supplements is the fact that they enhance cognitive function, making them great for the brain. This improves memory, focus, concentration, mental alertness, and it can help prevent degenerative diseases, especially as we grow older. Fish is often referred to as being ‘brain food’ because it is rich in omega 3s.

Great for the heart

Another fantastic benefit of omega 3 supplements, is the fact that they are so beneficial for the heart as they help reduce LDL cholesterol and they help strengthen the heart and improve the circulatory system in general. They also provide potent anti-inflammatory properties, which is another great benefit.

Omega 3 VS Omega 3-6-9

Whilst omega 3, 6, and 9 supplements are very beneficial, experts have found that most people are lacking enough omega 3 in their diets, as omega 6 and 9 are found in a much wider range of different foods and sources. The body can actually produce omega 9 naturally, so we get some naturally, although we still benefit from slightly more. Put simply, all omega supplements are important, it is simply the fact that omega 3 is the most important as it provides the most benefits, plus it is harder to get enough of.

What can it be stacked with?

As this is a general health and well-being supplement, most people will simply consume omega 3 supplements with multi-vitamins, Glucosamine, and perhaps an omega 6 and 9 supplement. There is nothing fancy here, but the benefits are hugely impressive.
