What is NAC?

NAC is often referred to simply as NAC and it is actually a precursor to glutathione, which is another highly beneficial compound. The body can actually naturally synthesize L-Cysteine, but on top of that, it is also commonly located in foods such as egg yolks, chicken, and red peppers. L-Cysteine is a non-essential amino acid, and it is described as being non-essential, due to the fact that the body can naturally synthesize it. However, just because it is non-essential, that doesn’t mean that we can’t benefit from increasing our daily intakes. NAC is basically an altered form of L-Cysteine, due to the fact that L-Cysteine supplementation would be incredibly unstable. It is attached to an Acetyl group, hence the name.

How does it work?

NAC works in a whole host of different ways, which is why it is considered to be so useful and beneficial. One of the ways in which is works, is that it helps to actively lower LDL cholesterol, which is the bad cholesterol that is responsible for blocking and clogging our arteries. It also works to increase our immune systems, help improve liver health and function, assist with protein synthesis, and increase energy levels. It functions as a potent antioxidant that helps to eradicate free-radicals and toxins from the body, promoting overall health and well-being.

What are the Benefits of NAC supplements?

Some of the primary benefits of NAC supplements include the following:

It protects the liver

Another benefit of NAC, is the fact that it has been found to protect the liver in a whole host of different ways. To begin with, it can help to reduce the toxicity of certain toxins and pollutants that could damage the liver. It can even reduce the harmful effects of alcohol on the liver, making it very healthy indeed.

Improved heart health

As NAC helps to dramatically reduce LDL cholesterol, the heart, and indeed, the cardiovascular system in general, will benefit in a number of ways. LDL cholesterol can block the arteries and can cause strokes, heart attacks, blood clots, hypertension, and much more besides. As LDL cholesterol levels are greatly reduced thanks to NAC, our heart and cardiovascular system in general, benefits hugely.

Other benefits include:

  • Increased energy levels
  • Improved post-workout recovery
  • A stronger immune system
  • Reduced LDL cholesterol levels
  • Helps protect the liver
  • Easily absorbed
  • Promotes general health and well-being
  • And more…

How and when should they be consumed?

Health Canada Recommended Dose (powder): Scoop size: 0.5 g. Adults: 1 Scoop(s) 1 time(s) per day. Take with meals.

Health Canada Recommended Dose (capsules): Adults: 1 Capsule(s) 1 time(s) per day. Take with meals.

NAC VS L-Cysteine

As mentioned, NAC is derived from L-Cysteine, but is attached to an acetyl group to make it more stable. L-Cysteine supplementation alone is very unstable as it can lead to cysteine toxicity. This is very serious as it could seriously damage your body’s cells, and could even kill you. By attaching it to an acetyl group however, it becomes much safer and much more stable for human consumption.

What can it be stacked with?

Most individuals will consume NAC supplements for general health and well-being purposes, meaning that it stacks well with vitamin supplements such as Vitamin C, and multi-vitamins. Omega 3 supplements also work well with it. In particular, it stacks very well with ascorbic acid, AKA Vitamin C, because it too functions as an antioxidant.
