Description

Casein is a slow digesting, slow absorbing protein. Hydrolyzed Casein has undergone an additional filtration and processing process that breaks it down into smaller amino acids. Basically, the proteins have been "pre-digested" and the bioavailability is increased (basically more of your muscle cells absorb it) so you get more of the benefits. What is Hydrolyzed Casein protein?

Casein protein is derived from dairy, and usually comes from cow’s milk, although, unlike whey protein, which also comes from milk, casein protein is absorbed very different by the body. Whereas whey protein is a rapid absorbing protein, casein protein is a slow digesting, slow absorbing protein. Casein protein is actually the primary protein source found in milk, with much of it being found in the milk solids, when milk separates as it turns into cheese. It is also rich in all of the essential amino acids that the body requires, due to the fact that it is unable to synthesize them by itself. Hydrolysed casein, has undergone an additional filtration and processing process, which breaks it down into smaller amino acids. Basically, the proteins have been “pre-digested” which means that they are easier for the body to absorb, so more of them are used, and less go to waste. This pre-digestion process increases the proteins’ bioavailability, so basically more of your muscle cells absorb it, so you get more of the benefits.

How does it work?

Protein is vital for muscle growth, function, and repair, and it also plays a vital role in hormone regulation, as well as cellular health in general. Not all proteins are the same however, as different proteins are absorbed in different ways, or should that be “wheys”, pardon the pun. Anyways, whereas whey protein is absorbed quickly by the body, casein protein, due to its molecular structure, is absorbed much slower and is marketed as being a slow-release protein. Our muscles and bodies need a constant stream of proteins and amino acids, especially if we’re trying to build muscle, as the last thing we want is for our bodies to enter a catabolic state, which means that the body will eat away at muscle tissue when it is lacking energy, I.E when we sleep. Because of this, for times when we are going for a long duration without any proteins or energy, we require a casein protein shake as that will provide a slow and steady stream of proteins and nutrients for the muscles, for a number of hours. Whey protein would be absorbed and used up far too quickly, making it a waste of time. A casein protein before bed however, provides all of the protein, nutrients, and energy required for not only preventing catabolism, but also for ensuring the body stays in an anabolic (muscle building state). The hydrolysed casein basically means that more of the casein makes its way into the cells, as opposed to going to waste.

What are the main benefits of Hydrolyzed Casein protein?

Some of the main benefits of hydrolzyed casein protein supplements include:

Enhanced growth and repair

We don’t actually build muscle in the gym at all, we destroy it. We build muscle when we rest, especially when we sleep. In order to do so however, we need the right materials in the right quantities, which in this instance, is protein and amino acids. Hydrolzyed casein means that throughout the night, our bodies have the right materials required to synthesize new muscle tissue, which increased muscle mass, and helps assist with post-workout recovery in the process.

Slow release protein

As mentioned, we need protein constantly throughout the day in order to maximize muscle growth and repair, and for times when we aren’t able to eat, a casein shake is perfect as it will keep you ticking over for several hours, so you needn’t worry about muscle wastage or breakdown.

Rich in amino acids

There are more than 20 separate amino acids, with each one providing its own unique benefits for the body. Some the body can synthesize, whereas others, it cannot, which means they have to come from dietary sources. These are known as essential amino acids, and casein is rich in all of them.

Other benefits include:

  • Slow release protein
  • Rich in amino acids
  • Pre-digested protein
  • Increased muscle growth and repair
  • Great for weight management
  • Great taste
  • Convenient
  • Improved immunity
  • Great for recovery
  • And more...

How and when should it be consumed?

Health Canada Recommended Dose (powder): Adults: 1 Scoop(s) 1 time(s) per day. Mix product well in 1-2 cups of liquid (water, juice, etc.) immediately before consumption. Store in a cool, dry place.

What can it be stacked with?

Hydrolyzed casein can be stacked with whey protein, Creatine, multi-vitamins, L-Glutamine, and Omega 3 supplements.

Hydrolyzed Casein Ingredients

Per Scoop

Ingredients (per scoop): Hydrolyzed casein (Hydrolyzed casein, Bos taurus - Milk) .......................... 24 Grams (84 Percent Protein)
 Ingredients: Hydrolyzed Casein.

Hydrolyzed Casein VS Micellar Casein

Basically, micellar casein protein is absorbed slower than hydrolysed casein, which has been pre-digested for quicker absorption. Although casein is designed to be a slow digesting protein, sometimes quicker absorption can be beneficial.
