What is Melatonin?

Melatonin is a natural hormone that can be produced internally via the brain. The pineal gland located within the brain is responsible for creating this hormone and it is considered to be a very beneficial and important hormone indeed. Melatonin is responsible for a person’s awakening patterns and sleeping cycles, and although primarily produced and secreted via the pineal gland within the brain, there are also small dosages of melatonin present in natural foods such as fruits, vegetables, grains, and meats. Of course, to make life even easier, melatonin supplements are also very popular, and they can provide a whole host of different benefits in the process.

How does it work?

The human body basically has its very own internal regulatory clock that is responsible for the hours in which you sleep, and when you wake up. That is why people who go to sleep at roughly the same time each night, will wake up at roughly the same time the next day, without having to rely on an alarm clock. The human body clock is responsible for how much melatonin is produced naturally, though there are other factors such as age, diet, and genetics, which is why some people produce more than others. During the evening, melatonin levels within the body begin to creep up, and they peak late at night, before gradually declining as the morning approaches. Our bodies actually produce melatonin based upon how much light is present, as darkness triggers an increase in melatonin secretion, because the body associates darkness with sleep. Common issues such as seasonal affective disorder are influenced by an increase in melatonin, which is why these issues become apparent when there is less light during the day, I.E in winter. However, as we grow older, melatonin levels gradually decline, which can then affect memory, as well as mood due to a lack of sleep. In these cases, melatonin supplements are absolutely ideal.

What are the benefits of using Melatonin supplements?

Some of the primary benefits associated with melatonin supplements include:

Improved quality of sleep

As mentioned, the primary benefit of melatonin is the fact that it helps the body to feel tired and drift off to sleep at night, plus it influences when we wake up. If a person’s pineal gland is not able to produce enough melatonin, they may find themselves suffering with insomnia, or constantly waking up throughout the night. Melatonin supplements however, can help promote a good night’s sleep, making them very beneficial indeed.

Treats and prevents migraines

Studies have also found that melatonin supplements can help to greatly reduce migraine pain and discomfort, and it can even help to prevent them altogether in some cases. Melatonin provides anti-inflammatory benefits, helping to reduce pain and inflammation in the head, which can cause migraines and headaches.

Increases muscle mass

Nowadays, there are many bodybuilders including melatonin as part of their everyday supplement stacks, due to the fact that melatonin has been found to increase muscle mass. Melatonin helps to trigger the release of anabolic hormones such as Growth Hormone, which has been proven to greatly enhance muscle growth and recovery. The more GH you produce, the more muscle you will build, and the quicker you will recover, so it’s no wonder why bodybuilders are supplementing with melatonin.

Other benefits include:

  • Improved quality of sleep
  • Prevents insomnia
  • Increases muscle mass
  • Anti-inflammatory properties
  • Treats migraines and headaches
  • Boosts the immune system and protects against illness and disease
  • Improves cognitive health and function
  • And more...

How and when should it be consumed?

Health Canada Recommended Dose (capsules): Adults: 1 Capsule(s) 1 - 3 time(s) per day. Do not drive or use machinery for 5 hours after taking melatonin. Take once a day, at or before bedtime, after darkness has fallen, while travelling, and at destination until adaptation to the new daily pattern. Jet Lag: Take once a day at bedtime after darkness has fallen, while travelling, and at destination until adaptation to the new daily pattern.

What can it be stacked with?

Melatonin can be stacked with a whole variety of different supplements, based upon your goals and targets. For a general health and wellness improving stack however, a great stack may include: melatonin, vitamin C, omega 3, multivitamins, and St John’s Wort.
