In the supplement industry, there’s one supplement that has been turning a lot of heads as of late. That supplement in question is turmeric. The main reason why turmeric has been found to be so healthy however, is because of the fact that it contains an active ingredient known as curcumin. Curcumin is renowned for its many healing and medicinal properties, and if used in conjunction with a healthy lifestyle, it can really provide numerous health benefits.
What is curcumin?
Curcumin is found within turmeric, but it is not the same as turmeric. Turmeric supplements do indeed contain curcumin, but curcumin supps do not contain turmeric. Curcumin is an active ingredient found within turmeric and it is curcumin that is responsible, primarily at least, for turmeric’s numerous health benefits. Curcumin is one of three curcuminoids found within turmeric, that help to provide it with its health benefits, and its amazingly vibrant golden yellow colour. In most typical servings of turmeric, you will find roughly 8% curcumin. Curcumin supplements, however, obviously provide more concentrated curcumin per serving, which in turn means that they provide more health benefits. Curcumin is perhaps best known for its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, although it provides much more than that.
How does it work?
Curcumin is a very complex ingredient, and because it provides so many different individual health benefits to the human body, it works in a variety of different ways. To keep things as simple as we can however, we’ll now look at how it works with regards to its antioxidant properties, and its anti-inflammatory properties. In the body, inflammation is a natural process, that is actually important. Inflammation helps your body to repair damage to itself, and it helps the body to rid itself of foreign invaders that could cause illness and disease. The problem is that too much inflammation can be bad for us. Increased rates of inflammation can act as precursors for cancer, heart disease, arthritis, chronic pain, metabolic syndrome, Alzheimer’s, cognitive decline, and much more. Curcumin blocks a molecule known as NF-kB which makes its way into our cell nuclei and switches on specific genes which are responsible for inflammation. As curcumin is able to block these molecules, it is able to fight and prevent inflammation. Basically, it functions as a heathy and natural pain-killer, with none of the risky side effects. It also rids the body of toxins and free-radicals, which can attack our cells and cause damage to them via oxidization. Because of its potent antioxidant properties, curcumin can boost immunity and prevent illness and disease.
What are the benefits of curcumin supplements?
Now we’ll look at some of the main benefits of curcumin:
Anti-inflammatory
As we just looked at above, Curcumin is able to block and prevent inflammation in your body on a molecular level. It blocks molecules responsible for causing inflammation in the body, making it a wonderful supplement for people suffering from joint pain, headaches, or any other medical conditions which have been linked to inflammation.
Boosts immunity
Because curcumin is a powerful antioxidant, it helps to boost the immune system and thereby help to keep you fit and healthy. Oxidation is a process in the body that is responsible for cellular damage and mutation. Helping to fight and prevent oxidation is therefore an essential part of any healthy living regime, which is why curcumin’s potent antioxidant properties have been found to be so useful.
Natural pain-relief
Even though this benefit has been mentioned in the anti-inflammatory section, we feel that it’s so important and beneficial that we’ve given it its own section. Curcumin serves as a natural form of pain-relief, meaning that it can help to fight pain and discomfort in a number of ways. Whether you suffer from headaches, joint pain, injury, arthritis, or just general discomfort, curcumin is a very effective supplement to have at your disposal. Furthermore, it’s much safer than many lab-created pain-killing drugs and medications.
