Alpha GPC, also known scientifically as Alpha-Glycerophosphocholine, is a supplement containing choline that is renowned for its performance enhancing benefits, as well as its Nootropic characteristics. Read the full product description for more information.
What is Alpha GPC?
As we just mentioned in our intro, Alpha GPC contains choline. In fact, it is sometimes known as choline alfoscerate. Basically, it is a combination of choline and a molecule known as glycerophosphate. It is a phospholipid which is actually isolated from soy. Recently it has created waves in the world of health and fitness as there is very strong evidence to suggest that this supplement not only supports cognitive health and function – making it great for the brain, it also helps to promote increases in muscle strength and power outputs, and it can potentially help stimulate the production of growth hormone, which is essential for muscle growth and recovery.
How does it work?
Alpha GPC works in a variety of ways. Because of its molecular structure, it contains a lipid tail which enables neuronal cell membranes to incorporate it and absorb it. Now bound to the membranes of said cells, this choline-containing molecule provides the cells with the required compounds needed to enable them to perform acetylcholine neurotransmitter synthesis. Basically, in simple terms, Alpha GPC helps to positively stimulate systems in your body which are responsible for cognitive functions such as memory, thinking, and reacting. This is why Alpha GPC is renowned for its Nootropical benefits.
What are the benefits of Alpha GPC?
There are a number of key benefits associated with Alpha GPC, these include the following:
Improved cognitive health and function
First and foremost, we’ll begin by looking at what helped to get Alpha GPC where it is today. As we looked at above, Alpha GPC works by stimulating the cholinergic system in the body, which is responsible for cognitive health and function. It helps provide cells with the compounds needed for them to function as they should. Alpha GPC can not only improve short and long-term memory, it has also been found to potentially help protect against degenerative conditions affecting the brain such as Dementia and Alzheimer’s. This in itself, makes it a very promising supplement.
Increased strength and power
So far, we’ve focussed on the cognitive health benefits of Alpha GPC, but now we’re going to look at the reason why bodybuilders and strength athletes are also supplement with this product. Studies have found that Alpha GPC can help individuals to generate more explosive strength and power. In fact, one study determined that Alpha GPC supplementation could help individuals generate as much as 14% more power during the concentric (positive) part of a resistance-based exercise such as the bench press.
Increased energy levels
One lesser-known benefit of Alpha GPC supplementation is the fact that it can also help to increase your energy levels and help fight fatigue. Individuals suffering with an iron deficiency suffer with fatigue. Vegans and people that don’t consume much red meat often suffer from anaemia and fatigue due to a lack of iron. Alpha GPC is ideal because it helps to increase the rates of absorption in the body of nonheme iron, which is iron found in plant-based sources.
