What is Calcium Citrate?
Calcium is a mineral that supports a whole host of different aspects of human health, especially in regards to the health of the teeth, and of the bones. What people may not have been aware of however, is the fact that calcium is also vital for optimal nerve and muscle function as well. Calcium supplements however, are not created equally and there are a number of different forms of calcium supplement currently available. Arguably the most common and most effective calcium supplement is calcium citrate. Whilst foods such as dairy, and leafy greens are rich in calcium, often people do not consume enough of these, and as a result, calcium supplementation is highly recommended. Calcium citrate works most efficiently when consumed with a whole food source. What’s more, calcium citrate can be most optimally absorbed by the body, in an acidic environment, due to the fact that the citrate is already highly acidic, so no additional stomach acid is required.
How does it work?
Calcium citrate works in a number of different ways, although primarily, it is designed to help strengthen the bones, as well as the teeth. It can treat medical conditions caused as a result of low calcium levels, including conditions such as rickets and osteoporosis. What’s more, studies have revealed that women require more calcium than men, especially whilst pregnant, so calcium citrate works extremely well when used by women, especially those who are pregnant. In terms of bone health however, calcium citrate really comes into its own, as, ordinarily, if a person has low levels of calcium in their blood, the body will tap into calcium stores within the bones, thereby weakening the bones and putting them at risk of conditions such as osteoporosis. Calcium citrate not only prevents the body from tapping into calcium stores within the bones, it also naturally increases calcium levels anyway, so it really is a win-win.
What are the benefits of using Calcium Citrate supplements?
Some of the primary benefits associated with calcium citrate supplements include the following:
Stronger bones
One of the main benefits of taking calcium citrate, or any other supplement for that matter, is the fact that it can help to strengthen your bones. Calcium is vital for bone health and strength, and the more calcium there is, the stronger and healthier the bones, and indeed the teeth, will become.
Reduced risk of osteoporosis
Osteoporosis is a condition caused by a lack of calcium, which results in weak and brittle bones. Typically it is older people that suffer from osteoporosis but it can affect anybody, and what’s more, it can easily be avoided. Usually it is caused by the body stealing calcium from the bones when blood calcium levels get low. If you supplement with calcium however, calcium stores cannot get low, so calcium stores within the bones are left alone.
Improved overall health and well-being
Whilst calcium primarily proves to be beneficial for the bones and teeth, calcium is a mineral that supports a number of other aspects of human health and well-being in the process, especially in regards to muscle function, nerve function, and immunity. Calcium boosts the immune system, which in turn helps to keep us fitter and healthier, and it ensures the muscles and nerves function as they should in the process.
Other benefits include:
- Strengthens teeth and bones
- Improves the immune system
- Promotes healthy nerve and muscle function
- Reduced risk of arthritis
- Promotes overall health and well-being
- Easy and convenient to use
- And more...
How and when should it be consumed?
Health Canada Recommended Dose (capsules): Adults: 1 Capsule(s) 1 - 3 time(s) per day. Take a few hours before or after taking other medications.
Calcium Citrate VS Carbonate
Though very similar, calcium citrate and calcium carbonate supplements do still differ from one another, and for that reason they are still unique in their own rights. Calcium carbonate is the more common of the two and this form of calcium is alkaline, as opposed to acidic, like the citrate. This means that a lot of stomach acid is required to process and digest it. You should therefore consume it just after a meal, or alternatively, with an acidic beverage such as orange juice (fresh of course). Calcium carbonate provides more calcium per serving than citrate, so smaller dosages are required.
What can it be stacked with?
Calcium citrate can be stacked with a number of supplements designed to promote health and well-being, especially where the joints, mind, and body are concerned. An ideal stack in this instance would be: a multi-vitamin, vitamin c, omega 3 supplements, and glucosamine, along with the calcium citrate of course.
