What is HMB?
HMB, or to refer to it scientifically, Beta-hydroxy beta-methylbutyric acid, is actually a derivative of leucine, which is an extremely potent amino acid required for a number of functions and processes within the body, including protein synthesis. Basically, once leucine enters the body, a certain percentage of it is broken down and metabolized into HMB. Because leucine, and by default, HMB, is so essential for protein synthesis, and for the metabolism of new muscle tissues, HMB is considered an extremely beneficial supplement for strength athletes, bodybuilders, and individuals looking to increase their muscle mass and power.
How does it work?
As mentioned, once leucine is consumed, it is then converted into HMB, which provides a number of benefits, which we’ll cover in just a moment. HMB however, cuts out the middleman, so instead of having to first break down the leucine and convert it into HMB, the body instantly has access to HMB, so it can get started right away. When an individual takes part in resistance training, or when the muscles are placed under any form of stress, ordinarily they would become damaged, fatigued, and worn down. HMB however, helps to prevent the degradation of muscle tissue during periods of resistance training and exercise. Put simply, HMB helps to ensure that the muscles don’t become damaged or worn down when you exercise, which means that you can exercise harder, and more intensely, and that the muscles not only will be able to function more efficiently, but that they will also be protected against damage caused via the exercise. It is an anti-catabolic supplement that has been popular for many years.
What are the main benefits of HMB?
As you can see, some of the main benefits associated with HMB supplementation, are based around muscle growth and repair. Here’s a more detailed look at the main benefits of HMB supplementation:
Muscle growth
Although it is not as effective for building muscle as leucine, HMB has still been found to contribute towards muscle growth for a number of reasons. To begin with, HMB helps assist with protein synthesis, so new muscle tissues and proteins can still be synthesised, but on top of that, it also helps prevent the breakdown of muscle tissue, making the muscles bigger and stronger, so they can perform harder when you exercise. The harder you train, the more muscle you can potentially build.
Prevents muscle breakdown
The main benefit of HMB however, is the fact that it has been found to help prevent the breakdown of muscle tissue during bouts of intense physical exercise, which in turn will help preserve the muscles and allow them to work harder before they eventually fatigue.
Boosts general health and well being
Although these benefits aren’t focussed on a great deal, many experts have revealed that HMB can boost a person’s general health and well-being in a number of ways. To begin with, HMB can reduce LDL cholesterol, which in turn can help reduce blood pressure and can reduce your risks of heart attack, stroke, and heart disease. Studies have also revealed that HMB can help improve a person’s immune system, thus making them healthier by default.
Other benefits include:
- Increased protein synthesis
- Increased athletic performance and strength
- Enhanced post-workout recovery
- Increased muscle mass
- Can reduce LDL cholesterol
- Can reduce risk of heart disease and problems
- Can reduce blood pressure
- Can reduce risk of stroke
- And more...
How and when it should be consumed?
Health Canada Recommended Dose (capsules): Adults: 6 Capsule(s) 1 - 2 time(s) per day. Store in a cool, dry place.
Health Canada Recommended Dose (powder): Scoop size: 5 g. Adults: 1 Scoop(s) 1 time(s) per day. Mix product well in 1-2 cups of liquid (water, juice, etc.) immediately before consumption.
HMB VS Leucine
As you can see, although very similar, due largely to the fact that HMB is a derivative of leucine, the two are still very different to one another, so it is advised that you consume leucine, and HMB separately to one another, in order to see the best results. Lecuine for example, is essential for protein synthesis and is therefore essential for the growth of new muscle tissue. HMB however, is more anti-catabolic and instead of helping to build muscle, (which it still does) it actually helps to protect them and prevent them from being damaged when you exercise and workout.
What can HMB be stacked with?
HMB is extremely beneficial for bodybuilders and athletes, and as a result, it is commonly found in many typical bodybuilding stacks. A firm favourite for example, is: whey protein, Creatine and BCAAs. It can be stacked with a number of different sports supplements, although for muscle building purposes, it is best that you stick with the tried and tested favourites.
