What is White Willow Bark
Since around 500 B.C white willow bark has been used for medicinal purposes, where it was, and still is, a common ingredient found in traditional Chinese medicine, or TCM for short. Believe it or not, but it actually contains virtually the exact same chemical medicinal properties as standard everyday aspirin, making it absolutely ideal for pain and discomfort relief. In the past, white willow bark was primarily consumed by being drank, as the bark was boiled in water for 2 – 3 minutes before being consumed. Nowadays however, it is far more common for white willow bark to be consumed in supplement form, usually via capsules.
How does it work?
White willow bark works in a variety of different ways, though mainly its primary function is to provide relief from pain and discomfort. For example, white willow bark has been proven to help alleviate headaches and migraines, due to the fact that it contains Salicylic acid, which is commonly in the form of salicin, which is then converted into salicylic acid once it is absorbed internally by the body. Because of this, it is considered much gentler and much more forgiving on the gastrointestinal system. One of the main ways in which it is able to help alleviate pain and discomfort, is down to the fact that it contains a number of anti-inflammatory compounds that can ease inflammation, and can therefore help to reduce pain. Headaches, arthritis, osteoporosis, and general joint aches and pains can be treated and improved thanks to white willow bark. It can even help treat bursitis, which is when sacks, filled with fluid on and around the joints, become swollen and inflamed. The effects of white willow bark extract are very similar to those associated with aspirin, which is not surprising as the two are so very similar to one another.
What are the benefits of using White Willow Bark supplements?
Some of the primary benefits associated with white willow bark supplements include the following:
Treats bursitis
As mentioned previously, bursitis is a condition which is very painful, that occurs when protective fluid-filled sacks on and around the joints, become swollen and inflamed. White willow bark extract however, contains a number of anti-inflammatory properties, making it great for treating and preventing inflammation.
Treats headaches and migraines
Just like aspirin, white willow bark extract is a supplement that is very beneficial when it comes to treating headaches and migraines. Again, headaches and migraines are often caused via swelling and inflammation in and around the head, which can sometimes become so severe that it can lead to a person becoming virtually immobile. The inflammation and swelling that causes these conditions however, is often alleviated and reduced altogether as a result of white willow bark supplementation, so if you suffer with headaches or migraines, this supplement is ideal.
Treats arthritis
Another great benefit of this supplement is the fact that it has been proven to help to treat arthritis pain and discomfort, which again, is down mainly to the fact that it provides so many anti-inflammatory benefits.
Other benefits include:
- Reduces swelling and inflammation
- Treats and prevents headaches and migraines
- Assists with pain management
- Treats and prevents bursitis
- Can help to ease lower back pain
- Eases muscular and joint pain
- And more...
