What is L-Glutamine
L-Glutamine is a non-essential amino acid, which makes up a great deal of our skeletal muscle tissue. As it is non-essential, this basically means that the body can synthesize it naturally and so doesn’t necessarily require it via dietary sources. However, studies have found that increased L-Glutamine consumption, can provide a whole host of benefits for the human body. Proteins are made up of amino acid building blocks, and glutamine is one of the most important building blocks for muscle tissue in the entire body. It plays a key role in a whole host of physiological processes within the body, and is essential for health and well-being. On top of that however, it also plays a vital role in the growth and repair of muscle tissue as well.
How does it work?
Glutamine, just like other amino acids, is essential for the growth and repair of muscle proteins, but that is just the beginning. You see, glutamine also plays a vital role in the production of energy within the cells. You see, our bodies naturally produce ammonia, which is produced as a result of protein metabolism, and is a by-product of this very process. Ammonia is toxic, but glutamine actually helps the body to remove it as it helps transport the ammonia to the liver, where it is then neutralized and flushed from the body. When we become more active, glutamine is beneficial because it is converted into glucose, which the body uses as a primary source of energy. Glutamine is therefore ideal for exercise and working out, although there is still more to come. Glutamine you see, can also assist with protein synthesis and so can help the muscles to recover following an intense spell of physical exercise.
What are the main benefits of L-Glutamine?
Now we’ll take a look at some of the most prominent benefits associated with glutamine supplementation:
Increased muscle mass
As mentioned, glutamine actually assists with the growth and repair of muscle tissues via protein synthesis, making it a perfect post-workout supplement. However, on top of that, glutamine is also converted into glucose within the body, which in turn means that the body will generate more energy. The more energy you have, the harder you can work in the gym, so the more you will be able to get done during your workout.
Increased immunity
Another benefit of glutamine, is that it can help significantly increase a person’s immune system. Low levels of L-Glutamine have been heavily linked with a suppressed immune system, which is the last thing you want when it comes to health and well-being. Studies have revealed that increased Glutamine consumption, can actually lead to an increase in a person’s immune system.
Detoxification
Glutamine is also considered a very beneficial amino acid in regards to detoxification. You see, as mentioned, ammonia is produced by the body as a by-product of the production of proteins, and this ammonia is toxic, and can cause a wide range of health issues and dangers. Glutamine however, forces it into the liver, where it is quickly neutralised and flushed from the body.
Other benefits include:
- Increased muscle mass
- Increased post-workout recovery
- Increased energy levels
- Increased strength
- Improved digestion and intestinal health
- Can help improve immune system
- Can help eliminate toxins from the body
- Can help improve mental health and cognitive function
- And more...
How and when should it be consumed?
Health Canada Recommended Dose (powder): Scoop size: 5 g. Adults: 1 Scoop(s) 1 time(s) per day. Store in a cool, dry place.
L-Glutamine VS Glutamic Acid
Glutamine and Glutamic acid are both amino acids and are very similar to one another, although they also have their very distinct and unique benefits in the process. Glutamic acid for example, is a component of MSG, or Monosodium Glutamate, and functions as a nootropic, providing benefits for the brain and a person’s mental health and well-being. Glutamine however, is more about physiological and physical benefits, so put simply, glutamic acid is great for the brain, and glutamine is great for everything else.
What can you stack it with?
Glutamine is commonly included in most typical bodybuilding supplement stacks, because it is a great amino acid for building muscle. Typically, stacks including glutamine will consist of: whey protein, Creatine, BCAAs and Dextrose. For immune system boosting purposes however, and for simply improving a person’s health and well-being, glutamine can be stacked with Glucosamine, a Multi-vitamin, and an Omega 3 supplement.
