What is Waxy Maize Starch

Waxy maize starch is a carbohydrate source that is derived from maize, which is a form of corn. People often wonder why it is referred to as waxy maize starch, when, upon inspection, it is not waxy in the slightest. However, if you were to place it under a microscope, you would see that, in fact, in appearance, it does look incredibly similar to wax. This is the only similarity however, as it certainly doesn’t have the consistency of real wax. Waxy maize starch is rich in a substance known as amylopectin, which is a highly branched starch. It is naturally free from lactose and sugar, and is made up on long-chain carbohydrates. The fact that it is rich in amylopectin is especially important, as that increases the rate in which the starch can be absorbed and processed by the human body. It should also be noted, that it is low in Amylose, which can actually slow digestion and absorption down. It has a naturally low osmalility, which means that it can be utilized by the body very quickly. Because of this, waxy maize starch is the perfect post-workout supplement, and we’ll look at why that is in just a few moments.

How does it work?

Basically, WMS functions as a fast absorbing carbohydrate that is absolutely ideal for post-workout recovery. When we exercise and lift weights, our muscles are placed under a great deal of stress, they become damaged and destroyed, and glycogen levels quickly diminish. In order for the body to rebuild and repair these muscles however, it needs energy and nutrients to do so, which need to be absorbed by the muscle cells incredibly fast. After we workout, as our muscle cells are completely empty, and as they have expanded slightly, they are primed for optimal anabolic nutrient absorption, which in basic terms, means that they can absorb more nutrients than they would normally be able to. The longer after a workout however, the less nutrients they can absorb, so you won’t be fully benefitting. WMS is a fast absorbing carbohydrate that restores glycogen levels almost instantly, plus it functions almost like a pump, helping to shuttle water and nutrients into the muscle straight away. This means that, combining it with a protein shake and various amino acids, much more of these proteins and amino acids can make their way into the muscle cells, which in turn, will initiate protein synthesis and will kick-start the post-workout recovery phase.

What are the benefits of Waxy Maize Starch supplements?

Some of the primary benefits of WMS include:

Rapid absorption

WMS is a very fast absorbing carbohydrate source, due to the fact that it possesses a naturally high osmolality. In actual fact, WMS is absorbed nearly 80% quicker than dextrose, which is also a rapid absorbing carb source, so it can get to where it needs to be immediately.

Fantastic post-workout supplement

As mentioned, when we exercise, after we finish, our muscle cells, deprived of nutrients, need various nutrients and energy in order to begin repairing themselves. For around one hour after training however, our cells can absorb more nutrients than usual. This is known as the ‘anabolic window’ and it is the optimal time to get nutrients into your muscles. WMS is absorbed almost instantly, helping to pull proteins, amino acids, and any other nutrients in the blood stream, out of the blood stream and into the muscles.

No bloating or cramps

One problem with some carbohydrate supplements, is the fact that they can cause painful stomach cramps and bloating, which will not make you feel too great. As WMS is in the stomach for a very, very short time however, it doesn’t have chance to cause any pain or discomfort, so you can begin sipping on it towards the end of your workout if you would like, and not experience any adverse cramping or pain as a result.

How and when should it be consumed?

Use one scoop (30 g) with either juice, a protein drink or 12 oz (355 ml) of cold water. To be used during training or immediately post-training depending on your needs, or anytime your carbohydrate requirements call for a high quality complex carbohydrate fuel source. Note: Very effective when combined with Creatine, Beta-Alanine and/or L-Arginine supplements.

    Waxy Maize Supplement Facts

    Waxy Maize Starch VS Maltodextrin

Maltodextrin is another popular post-workout carbohydrate supplement, though it is still very unique to waxy maize starch, for a variety of different reasons. Maltodextrin has a high GI, which also makes it useful for post-workout recovery. It however, is not absorbed quite as rapidly as WMS.

What can it be stacked with?

As WMS is ideal for bodybuilders, a typical bodybuilding stack consisting of Whey Protein, BCAAs, L-Leucine, Creatine, and Casein protein, will all work very well when stacked with WMS.
