What is Lysine?

Lysine is an essential amino acid, meaning that the body requires it in order to function efficiently, yet it cannot synthesize it naturally, like it can with non-essential amino acids, meaning that it has to come in the form of whole foods, or dietary supplements. It is one of around twenty unique amino acids that the body utilizes to create protein, meaning that it plays a key role in protein synthesis. Unlike most other amino acids however, that are commonly found in meat and fish products, lysine is actually naturally found in green leafy vegetables, as plants can create it by using aspartic acid. On top of that, it is also found in legumes, animals that feast primary on a herbivorous diet, and in certain forms of seafood.

How does it work?

Once it is in the human body, like a number of other similar amino acids, lysine actually plays a vital role in the production of collagen and of muscle tissues and proteins, which is why it is a firm favourite amongst bodybuilders, who are primarily looking to increase their overall muscle mass. On top of that however, it can also assist with the absorption of essential minerals such as calcium, which is does by facilitating with the production of digestive enzymes which help to break it down within the intestines, allowing the body to more easily absorb it. In terms of athletic performance however, not only can it assist with the production of muscle tissue, but studies have also found that it can help enhance natural production of creatinine, which is used to convert fatty acids into beneficial types of energy that are used by the body, meaning that it helps enhance energy levels and basic metabolic functions.

What are the benefits of using Lysine supplements?

Some of the primary benefits associated with lysine include the following:

Enhanced muscle growth

As mentioned previously, one of the primary roles of lysine, is to help enhance protein synthesis, which is where the body generates new muscle proteins. This in turn assists with the growth and repair of muscle tissue, especially following strenuous workouts where the muscles have taken a real pounding. By assisting with protein production, as well as collagen production, lysine is a supplement that can help people to increase their overall muscle mass levels.

Treats herpes and cold sores

As unpleasant as herpes and cold sores are, the good news is that lysine has been found to be very beneficial when treating them. Lysine has been found to help reduce the appearance of inflamed and painful-looking skin lesions on, and around, the affected areas.

Increased energy levels

Another great benefit of lysine is the fact that it has been found to enhance a person’s energy levels, due to the fact that it allows the body to naturally produce more creatinine, which is then used to convert fatty acids into forms of energy that can instantly be used by the body. For people looking to enhance their athletic ability, and the overall productiveness of workouts in the gym, lysine supplementation is very beneficial indeed.

Other benefits include:

  • Increased muscle mass
  • Stronger immune system
  • Enhanced fat loss
  • More energy
  • Can treat cold sores and herpes
  • Promotes bone and teeth health
  • Has showed promise when used to treat Bells Palsy
  • Enhances calcium absorption, as well as the absorption of other vital minerals
  • And more...

How and when should it be consumed?

Health Canada Recommended Dose (capsules): Adults: 2 Capsule(s) 1 - 3 time(s) per day.

What can it be stacked with?

Lysine is a very popular supplement in the bodybuilding community, and if muscle growth and athletic performance are your goals, a fantastic supplement stack to include lysine in, could be as follows: Pre-workout, lysine, BCAAs, whey protein, dextrose, creatine, leucine, and casein protein.
